Bio

Colin Layfield is currently resident in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Colin holds a BSc and MSc in Computer Science from the University of Calgary and a PhD from the University of Leeds, England. Colin's academic work and research interests lie in the fields of artificial intelligence and operations research where scheduling and timetabling problems were of primary interest. Techniques of particular interest were heuristics, artificial intelligence and constraint programming. Colin designed and developed the final examination timetabling system currently used by the University of Calgary. Many of the timetables generated using this system are provably optimal.

During Colin's time in the UK he spent time in York managing the development and implementation of an optimisation package for the rail industry employing AI techniques such as genetic algorithms and simulated annealing in addition to more classical techniques such as branch and bound. Colin has also worked on developing enterprise accounting solutions for a firm in Harrogate using both Client/Server methodologies as well as a web-based version.
